Content creator spotlight: GwenMelon

How I found Gwen

When I first found Gwen, I was just looking through random streams for no real reason, mostly to fuck around. I am not really much of a live stream viewer. I usually prefer YouTube. But that night I felt like trying something different.

I opened three streams and tabbed between them for a bit. Then I closed two of them, because Gwen was doing a hot dog-focused tier list. She was playing a game about managing a pool, but she absolutely had to stop because it was apparently more important to talk about hot dogs. She likes them a lot.

That was the moment that sold me. She made me laugh a lot, and she was the first streamer who ever made me feel comfortable actually being part of a community.

GwenMelon does so many different kinds of streams, and that is a huge part of why she is fun to watch.

One day she is doing a face paint stream. Another day she is deep into Minecraft, including hardcore runs, but she does not do them like most people. She will make a home for herself, create beautiful buildings, and even name her pets (rip). That made it hit so much harder when she lost her most recent attempt, where she was trying to do every achievement in the game. She got through so much of the list without dying. There was even one hellish day where she spent basically the whole stream trying to find one specific breed of wolf.

After that heartbreak, she had to take a bit of a break from Minecraft. She literally cried after dying because she had put that much into the run. That is the kind of streamer she is. She puts a lot into what she plays and into making the stream good. Gwen died to an Elder Guardian in the water, all because of one mistake: she had too much milk.

Another moment from Gwen's Minecraft streams.

In lieu of Minecraft, she decided to try Resident Evil 9 and ended up really enjoying it. After a great start fighting her way through the opening, she hit a long slog in a broken-down building where she was losing her mind trying to figure out where to go next. It was right in front of her. Amazingly, she still made it to the end of the game and, in typical Gwen fashion, chose the bad ending almost immediately. Despite suffering through parts of it, she said she wants to play the other Resident Evil games too eventually.

More recently she started playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and seems to be having a great time being a cute little cowboy. She tries not to be a murder hobo, but the gruff world has already pushed her into becoming a murderer.

However, her best streams are often the yap streams. Gwen can just talk for hours and somehow make it some of the best content. She is genuinely funny, but she is also great at being the fool. She does not let her ego get in front of herself, and she can laugh at herself. She is not afraid to be the butt of a joke.

She also made a ton of her own stream transitions and animated a lot of things for the stream herself. She is really talented as an artist, and you can see that all over the background of the stream. If you ask her to show you around, she just might give you a whole tour of all the cool stuff she has made.

The clips only tell part of it

A few clips give a pretty good idea of how weird and funny her streams can get.

She likes dressing up and doing face paints, she loves clown facepaint in particular. In this clip she is in full goofy girl regalia and she is leaving to go get whip cream, instead of just leaving she plays a goofy cartoon skedadle sound effect and runs away in a style that could only be described as stupidly/funnily.

There is also a clip where she tries to do the Mike Hunt joke and somehow ends up just saying “Mike Cunt.” That kind of failed delivery somehow makes it even funnier. She seems at home in embarrassment.

Which brings me to the next clip which has her mentioning that she did something gross on the previous stream and then she decides not to continue, only for someone in chat to guess immediately that she shit herself. Whereas most streamers would be mortified, she laughed hard and LONG. That is not something a lot of people could pull off, the chat moved on after that funny moment and she took it in stride.

In one clip she is dressed as Garfield. That is it. That is the clip.

And in another, she is playing a game I made for her called MelonFlaps, which she did not have to do, but she did, and that shows how committed to her community she is. She played my shitty Flappy Bird clone. She even went above and beyond and painted a background for the game herself. It was such a fun and unique stream moment.

Those clips are funny on their own, but they work even better if you have watched for a while, because she is a bit like a brain bug that burrows its way into your head and makes you laugh at her very specific Gwen-style bits.

The community matters too

A big reason to come back is Gwen herself, but the community is just as important.

There are a lot of regulars who make the stream better every time, and it would be hard to mention everyone. From TheThick to Geelong, there are so many people who add to the atmosphere and make chat feel like its own part of the experience. It is one of the few communities that immediately felt welcoming instead of weirdly closed off.

Why I keep watching

That is probably the simplest way to put it: Gwen is funny, creative, talented, and wildly unpredictable, but she also built a stream that feels comfortable to be in.

She is not afraid of being serious either. She can talk about toxicity in the world and in her own life, and she opens up in ways that can be genuinely touching. It can make people feel less alone, because they can see someone else is going through it too.

She can talk about politics and stand her ground even when people in chat challenge what she believes. She is not stubborn in a stupid way, though. If someone brings up a genuinely good point, she is not afraid to change her mind. But she also is not going to let someone bullshit her or scare her off.

Whether she is yapping for hours, getting emotionally destroyed by a Minecraft death, dressing up as Garfield, making weird bits out of nowhere, or playing something completely different, it always feels like you are getting a real person with real energy behind it.

That is why I fucking hate that bitch.

Just kidding, her stream is amazing and I hope she keeps growing and finding her best life.
